The 2024 Oscars were one to remember, bringing the audience to tears at some moments and laughter at others. From Ryan Gosling reuniting with the Kens from Barbie to John Cena going nearly nude onstage and Al Pacino skipping announcing the best picture nominees, here are some of Sunday night’s most memorable moments.

Ryan Gosling Reunited With Other Kens for Barbie Performance

Ryan Gosling and Mark Ronson took the stage to perform their Barbie hit “I’m Just Ken.” Gosling kicked off the performance from his seat in the audience behind co-star Margot Robbie, decked out in a hot pink, bedazzled custom Gucci suit, matching leather gloves and Gucci sunglasses. Gosling was joined by Simu Liu, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Ncuti Gatwa and more of the Kens from the Barbie film, who took the stage alongside their onscreen leader, donning suits with tails and top hats. Slash also made a special appearance during the performance. Read more. — Christy Piña

Jimmy Kimmel Calls Out Donald Trump During Show

Since host Jimmy Kimmel had an “extra minute” towards the end of Sunday’s well-oiled show, he decided to use his time to call out former President Donald Trump. “I’m really proud of something and I was wondering if I could share it with you. I just got a review,” the host quipped. Kimmel proceeded to read a post that Trump shared on his social media platform Truth Social. “Has there EVER been a WORSE HOST than Jimmy Kimmel at The Oscars,” the post read. “His opening was that of a less than average person trying too hard to be something which he is not, and never can be.” Kimmel’s response was to ask: “Thank you for watching… isn’t it past your jail time?” Read more. — Carly Thomas

Messi the Dog Makes a Surprise Appearance

Messi the Dog, the Anatomy of a Fall star and awards season darling, did, in fact, make an appearance at the Oscars on Sunday. A source had previously told The Hollywood Reporter that Messi would not be appearing at the Academy Awards after his Los Angeles press tour that saw him attend the Oscars nominees luncheon and partake in a press junket. The dog’s cameo, however, took place within the first few minutes of the telecast, as returning host Kimmel kicked off his opening monologue by praising the “great” films that were made in 2023, despite the dual actors and writers strikes that shut down Hollywood. John Cena Goes Nearly Nude While Presenting

John Cena may have not run across the Oscars stage nude, but he did awkwardly walk to present the award for best costume design. Kimmel initially kicked off the bit by asking, “Can you imagine if a nude man ran across the stage today? Wouldn’t that be crazy?” The host was referencing when Robert Opel infamously streaked during the 46th Academy Awards in 1974. Cena proceeded to pop his head out from backstage to inform Kimmel, “I changed my mind. I don’t want to do the streaker bit anymore. … You should feel ashamed right now for suggesting such a tasteless idea.” Read more. — Carly Thomas

Emma Stone’s Reaction to Kimmel’s Poor Things Joke Causes a Stir Online

Many Oscar viewers found themselves captivated by speculation about what Emma Stone said to her husband after Kimmel joked about the nudity in Poor Things during the awards show. Following a montage dedicated to the 11-time nominated film, the Oscars host quipped to the crowd that, “Those were all the parts of Poor Things that we’re allowed to show on TV.” The joke was ostensibly a reference to the level of sex and nudity in the Stone-led film, and many online felt that her reaction implied she was displeased with Kimmel’s comments. Some speculated she had turned to her husband next to her, Dave McCary, and said, “oh, my god.” Others believed she was saying,”what a prick.” Read more. — Zoe G Phillips

Jimmy Kimmel Calls Out Greta Gerwig Barbie Directing Snub

During his monologue, Kimmel was quick to call out the Film Academy for failing to nominate Greta Gerwig as director for Barbie. “It was a hard year but it was also a great year for movies despite the fact that everything stopped,” Kimmel reflected, alluding to the 2023 actors and writers strikes. “Here we are all dressed up celebrating the best of the best beginning with Barbie,” Kimmel said, describing the film starring Robbie and Gosling as a “monster hit.” “What an achievement to take a plastic doll no one even liked anymore… Now Barbie is a feminist icon thanks to Greta Gerwig who many believe deserved to be nominated for best director,” Kimmel added. After the audience erupted into an applause Kimmel quipped, “I know you’re clapping, but you’re the ones who didn’t vote for her by the way. Don’t act like you had nothing to do with this.” Read more. — Lexy Perez

Al Pacino Skips Announcing the Nominees While Presenting Best Picture

Al Pacino skipped over quite a few steps before announcing Oppenheimer as the best picture winner. The actor took the stage at the awards ceremony to present the top prize of the night. As is tradition, announcers will usually name all of the nominees before announcing who will be taking home the award. Instead of announcing the nominees — which also included American Fiction, Anatomy of a Fall, Barbie, The Holdovers, Killers of the Flower Moon, Maestro, Past Lives, Poor Things and The Zone of Interest — he opened the envelope and said, “My eyes see Oppenheimer.” Read more. — Christy Piña

Billie Eilish, Finneas Become Youngest Two-Time Oscar Winners

Billie Eilish, 22, and her brother Finneas, 26, became the youngest two-time Oscar winners with their best original song win. The sibling collaborators’ “What Was I Made For?” from Barbie won at the 2024 Oscars. This marks the pair’s second Oscar win in the category, as they took home the award for “No Time to Die” in 2022. When Eilish took the stage, she burst out laughing from excitement. “I had a nightmare about this last night,” joked the pop star. She admitted that she was “not expecting” to win again, but feels “so incredibly lucky and honored.” Read more. — Tatiana Tenreyro

Kate McKinnon Joked About Sending “Tasteful” Nudes to Steven Spielberg

Kate McKinnon was jokingly shocked to learn that her “tasteful” nudes have actually not been going to Jeff Goldblum, but rather to Steven Spielberg. The Saturday Night Live alum and her Barbie co-star America Ferrera took to the 2024 Oscars stage to present the awards for best documentary short and best documentary feature. Their bit led to a conversation about CGI that prompted McKinnon to ask audience member Spielberg if Jurassic Park franchise star Jeff Goldblum was, in fact, real. Ferrera proceeded to quip, “No.” McKinnon then asked, “Then to whom have I been sending for my tasteful nudes?” A deadpan Spielberg, jokingly, pointed to himself and the crowd erupted in laughter.
