A group of college students in Rhode Island raised money for a security guard so he could visit his family in Nigeria after being away from them for eleven years.

James, known among the students for his kindness, hardworking nature, and friendly smile, became more than just a security guard to the residents of Raymond Hall; he became a beloved community member. According to PEOPLE, the students were moved to take action after learning about James’s prolonged separation from his family. They launched a GoFundMe campaign on February 29 to raise the necessary funds to cover James’s travel expenses to Nigeria.
“James is without a doubt the best security guard here at Providence College. He works four overnight shifts a week and the Raymond Hall 4th Floor would love to raise money for him to see his family in Nigeria that he hasn’t seen in a long time. For those of you that don’t know James, he truly is one of the nicest people you will ever meet. He greets everybody with a smile and always welcomes conversations no matter what time of the night you run into him. He has expressed how much he enjoys his job here at PC, and we would love to be able to allow him to visit his family. He does not know how much we appreciate him, and hope that this shows to him how much he means to our community,” the post reads.
The campaign raised $3,000 within the first 24 hours, a testament to James’s beloved status and the students’ determination, but has reached $27,000.

On March 6, the students presented James with the collected funds, enabling him to plan a trip to Nigeria in June. The moment was captured in a touching photo shared on the GoFundMe page, showing James’s overwhelmed reaction, a poignant reminder of the profound effect of kindness and generosity. Sophomore Resident Advisor Daniel Singh and Dean of Students Steven Sears both echoed the sentiments of gratitude and admiration for James. Singh described the emotional weight of the moment the funds were presented, while Sears commended the authenticity and mutual care evident in this gesture.
