The web of intrigue around Spider-Man 4 thickens as Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures are apparently at odds over its direction for the highly-anticipated sequel

According to a new report from Daniel Richtman, Sony’s Tom Rothman is reportedly itching to push Spider-Man 4 into production and onto the big screen ASAP, because they desperately need another box office smash. Their director of choice is Jon Watts, the filmmaker behind the last three Spider-Man blockbusters. Sony’s logic is pretty simple: if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

On the other side of things, we’ve got Marvel Studios, which is led by Kevin Feige. Feige reportedly wants to shake things up by bringing in a new director for Spider-Man 4. It’s been previously rumored that the director he wants is Drew Goddard, a name that excites fans as he previously helmed The Cabin in the Woods and Bad Times at the El Royale. Feige also is said to want Watts to be involved with other MCU projects that are coming up.

It’ll be interesting to see how this all shakes out, but the creative differences between Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures highlight the complexities of collaborative filmmaking. If any of this is true, I’m sure they will all work everything out.

Richtman adds that Spider-Man franchise producer Amy Pascal hopes Feige will be involved with a future live-action Miles Morales movie, suggesting the partnership between Marvel Studios and Sony will continue once Tom Holland has bid farewell to Peter Parker.

It makes sense to keep Marvel involved, especially after how bad Madame Web turned out to be. Sony should not be making any more live-action Spider-Man projects on their own. They clearly haven’t learned anything about how to handle these characters.
