Fans have been wanting to see a sequel to Edge of Tomorrow for years. This is also something all of the creative team have been talking about, and they’ve been actively trying to make it a reality. Well, now that Tom Cruise has a deal in place at Warner Bros. the possibility of this sequel getting made is even stronger.

In a recent report from Variety, it was shared that the possibilities have been discussed for an Edge of Tomorrow follow-up film. So, this is something that the studio is now looking at possibly pursuing, which would be awesome!

But, Tom Cruise wants to expand on the kinds of films he makes. This is one of the reasons why he made the deal with Warner Bros. While he’s found massive success with the action films he makes, he is also looking to star in more prestige films, which makes sense for a guy at his age. He can’t make these action movies forever.

The report says that “Cruise wants more than action stardom — he’d like to return to working with auteurs like Paul Thomas Anderson.” The actor hasn’t earned an Oscar nomination for acting since he appeared in Anderson’s 1999 drama Magnolia.

One project that he is looking at that could give him that is Quentin Tarantino’s The Movie Critic, which Warner Bros. is actively pursuing. In this case, Cruise could work with an auteur like Tarantino, who is able to bring in both the box office performance and awards-season heat. The Movie Critic has yet to find a home, but its said the film could likely end up at Sony Pictures as they distributed Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood.

An insider at the studio said: “The strategy at Warner Bros. right now and the reason they made some of these big star deals is they’re basically playing with other people’s money. They’re shopping for Quentin or Cruise with the notion they can use it as a shiny object that is going to be additive when Zaslav sells the company.”

WB has got some interesting strategies right now, but signing Cruise on for a deal was a big one that they hope will pay off for them.
