Kelvin Harrison Jr. has been tapped to star in a new, untitled musical for Universal Pictures.

Per Deadline, Harrison Jr. will lead the upcoming musical film, which is directed by Michel Gondry and produced by Pharrell Williams.

The Holdover’s Da’Vine Joy Randolph is also in talks to star in the movie, though her casting has not been confirmed at this time.

According to Deadline, the film “is said to be a coming-of-age musical, set in 1977 Virginia Beach, which draws inspiration from Williams’ childhood growing up in the city’s Atlantis Apartments.”

Martin Hynes and Steven Levenson wrote the script for the movie. Mimi Valdés and Gil Netter are also producing alongside Williams.

What other movies has Kelvin Harrison Jr. been in?

Harrison Jr. made his professional acting debut in 2013’s 12 Years a Slave. He went on to star in movies like 2013’s Ender’s Game, 2016’s The Birth of a Nation, 2017’s Mudbound, 2017’s It Comes at Night, 2018’s Assassination Nation, 2019’s Waves, 2020’s The Trial of the Chicago 7, 2021’s Cyrano, and 2022’s Elvis. He was most recently seen in 2022’s Chevalier and is also attached to voice Scar in Barry Jenkins’ Mufasa: The Lion King, which releases in December 2024.

Gondry, meanwhile, is best known for directing 2004’s Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. He’s helmed a handful of other movies as well, including 2008’s Be Kind Rewind, 2011’s The Green Mornet, 2013’s Mood Indigo, 2023’s The Book of Solutions, and more.

Randolph recently won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Alexander Paynes’ The Holdovers. She also plays a recurring role in Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building and voiced Mama Luna in 2022’s Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, among other roles.
