Lionsgate announced at CinemaCon that they have teamed up with Barbie star and producer Margot Robbie to develop a movie based on the hit Hasbro board game Monopoly.
Hasbro Entertainment is producing the film alongside Robbie’s company LuckyChap and her partners Tom Ackerley and Josie McNamara.
It was announced that Hasbro and Lionsgate were developing this Monopoly movie last year. At the time Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks said in a statement: “This sale fully aligns with our strategy, and we are pleased to bring the process to a successful close.”
He added: “Lionsgate’s management team is experienced in entertainment and adept at driving value, and we’re glad to have found such a good home for our eOne film & TV business. We look forward to partnering with them, especially on a movie adaptation of Monopoly.”
There’s no word on what kind of story this movie will tell, if it will be live-action or animated, or a movie about playing the game vs. a movie set in the world of Monopoly, so we will just have to wait and see how the creative team spins the narrative.
Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson said that Robbie and her team have “a clear point of view” on the upcoming Monopoly movie.
He continued: “I could not imagine a better production team for this beloved and iconic brand than LuckyChap. They are exceptional producers who choose their projects with great thought and care, and join Monopoly with a clear point of view.
He continued: “We are tremendously excited to be working with the entire LuckyChap team on what we all believe can be their next blockbuster.”
