A mother from the U.K. says she was handed the wrong baby in a hospital maternity ward. The incident occurred at the Poole Hospital, and the woman, Maisie, shared her experience with TikTok.

In the video, Maisie said that the incident occurred in September 2023, 48 hours after she gave birth to her daughter, Isabella. Following the birth, Isabella required phototherapy treatment and was closely monitored in a nursery across from Maisie’s room. During her second night in the hospital, Maisie was mistakenly given another baby instead of her daughter, but the error was not immediately evident. She was told that the baby, who was taken out of the phototherapy unit because he wouldn’t settle, was her daughter. Trusting the midwife’s reassurance, she accepted the child but was horrified when she went to change the baby’s diaper and realized the baby was a boy, not Isabella.
The alarming discovery led her to seek assistance urgently, confronting the hospital staff, who were equally shocked by the mistake. According to NBC News, the hospital released a statement addressing the incident and said they were investigating: “We are investigating an incident in our maternity unit in September 2023 in which a baby was temporarily handed to the wrong mother. We deeply regret any distress that was caused and are committed to providing full support to the affected families. The safety of our parents and babies is the highest priority. We have fully reviewed all our safety procedures and we want to reassure you this was an isolated incident.”

The experience has led to a legal meeting for Maisie, who remained in the hospital for five days and dreaded the lack of discussion about the swap afterward. She also expressed the concern that the other mother was not notified about the incident.
“It was never spoken about again. I’m not even sure if the other mom knew what happened, which is really worrying,”
Earlier in March 2023, the Care Quality Commission issued a statutory warning to Poole Hospital for inadequately investigating problems within its maternity unit. This incident has prompted the hospital to commit to improvements in staff training and patient safety protocols, emphasizing its dedication to the welfare of both parents and children in its care.
