William Boswarva, a 29-year-old from Vauxhall, Liverpool, appeared at the Liverpool Crown Court where prosecutors described how he resorted to the tactic after impregnating a woman during a brief encounter and denied any involvement with the child. He reportedly pressured the woman to terminate her pregnancy and offered financial compensation on multiple occasions. When his initial plan failed, he resorted to asking another individual to undergo a paternity test in his place. At the time, COVID-19 restrictions were still in place, so the imposter wore a mask, presented Boswarva’s identification, and provided a saliva sample to medical staff.
During the trial, it was revealed that Boswarva had a history of criminal behavior, with previous convictions, including offenses of the prior year. Despite initially having a suspended sentence, he continued to engage in illegal activities. Judge Recorder Neil Owen-Casey said during sentencing that the impact of Boswarva’s actions caused the child’s mother emotional distress and feelings of guilt and inadequacy, as reported by the BBC

Moreover, the judge highlighted the fundamental right of the child to know his biological father, which Boswarva’s actions sought to deny. Casey also condemned his behavior and said he manipulated the system for his interests, disregarding the welfare of the child and his mother. Although Boswarva claims he’s unemployed and doesn’t receive benefits, he was still legally obligated to provide child support until the child reaches adulthood.
“You have made her feel she did something wrong and she has not done anything wrong at all. At the heart of this is a child who is being denied the opportunity to know who his biological father is.”
