Could Zack Snyder’s Superman have finally gotten some humanity? The Justice League director reveals his plans for the cancelled sequels.

One of the biggest criticisms of Zack Snyder’s Superman online was that the character never felt like he had any humanity. This idea was bolstered in Justice League, where the Knightmare sequences showed the Man of Steel under Darkseid’s control. However, according to Snyder, that was only a small part of his plans for the sequels.

“He was going to have to succumb to the Anti-Life, be destroyed, turn the clock back, and then get his chance for this battle against Darkseid,” Snyder explained in a recent interview with GQ. “If you will…that would have finished his trilogy of becoming this guardian, and sort of, return him to his humanity.”

For better or worse, Zack Snyder is truly the only director who would plan an entire Justice League trilogy where Superman was fallen from grace, only for him to be redeemed in the final hours. This unorthodoxed thinking is why so many people fell in love with his takes on the characters. Though, given how general audiences responded to his films, it may have been best his sequels were cancelled.

The Untold Story Of Zack Snyder’s Justice League

While fans continue their calls to #RestoreTheSnyderverse, most of Zack Snyder’s plans for his Justice League sequels are readily available online through storyboards and production notes. The thing that caught many fans’ eyes when they were first released was his plans for Superman. Not only would the hero have fallen from grace, but it would’ve been because Lois Lane was pregnant with Batman’s child.

In the cancelled Justice League sequel, Zack Snyder planned for Darkseid to kill Lois Lane while she was pregnant, breaking his will to live and leading to the Knightmare timeline. This would be resolved by Batman going back in time to sacrifice himself, revealing Lois was pregnant with his child and giving Superman the resolve to save the day. The child would then grow up to become the new Batman. If Superman’s far from grace would’ve been a hard sell, it’s hard to imagine how audiences would react to THAT twist!
