Illumination has released a fun new trailer for Despicable Me 4, and one of the big things if features is the Minions gaining superpowers to help them battle Will Ferrell’s villainous character.

While the story still follows Gru and his journey, the franchise continues to put the main focus on the minions. The audiences love the minions, so obviously the studio is going to lean into that.

This new chapter centers on Gru (Steve Carrell) and Lucy (Kristen Wiig) and their girls, Margo (Miranda Cosgrove), Edith (Dana Gaier) and Agnes (Madison Polan) “as they welcome a new member to the Gru family, Gru Jr., who is intent on tormenting his dad. Gru faces a new nemesis in Maxime Le Mal (Will Ferrell) and his femme fatale girlfriend Valentina (Sofia Vergara), and the family is forced to go on the run.”

The film also introduces new characters voiced by Joey King, Stephen Colbert, and Chloe Fineman.

The screenplay for the new film is written by Mike White (School of Rock, The White Lotus), and franchise director Chris Renaud (The Secret Life of Pets 2) returns to helm the franchise after being away from it for a decade. He last helmed Despicable Me 2, and this time he is sharing the directing duties with Patrick Delage in his directorial debut.

Despicable Me 4 is set to premiere in theaters on July 3, 2024.
