Rhonda Deaver was shocked to find her credit card had been used for $2,000 in unauthorized charges after she accidentally left it at Smith’s Cafe in Kinston. Deaver had visited the cafe following her weekly doctor’s appointment on April 30 but realized she had forgotten her credit card only after being alerted to suspicious transactions. After returning to Smith’s Cafe, Deaver learned that an employee posted unedited photos of the front and back of her credit card in a Facebook group called “Word of Mouth Kinston” to identify her. Unfortunately, the charges were already racked up.

“I couldn’t believe that they did that. But I was sick, thinking I might be responsible for all those charges. A lot of declines—but a whole lot that went through,” she explained to FOX 19. Deaver closed her account and disputed the charges but had expressed concerns about her financial situation because she lives on a fixed income. “There’s not like there’s extra money every month to cover those bills that someone else charged on my card,” she explained.

According to the Daily Mail, there was a similar incident involving an employee at a Minnesota ice cream where a generous customer suspected of suffering from dementia gave them a generous tip. Emily Swenson was a former Moorhead Freeze employee fired after accepting $100 from a customer who insisted on leaving it. She received a written warning stating that she was responsible for protecting the establishment’s reputation and preventing elderly customers from leaving large tips. Her parents posted the warning notice on Facebook, revealing that she was fired the next day for violating a policy against accepting bills over $20 as payment, even though the policy didn’t explicitly mention tips.
