Johnston,38, admitted to assaulting his wife to the point of endangering her life. According to the BBC, the court hearing revealed that he had a history of abusing his wife, which escalated to a severe attack in March 2022 after a night of drinking. Prosecutors stated that after Johnston returned home from a pub, he sent aggressive texts to Grace, and she tried to prevent him from leaving when he said he intended to end their marriage. During the confrontation, Johnston forcefully restrained her on the ground, using his knees to pin her, and began strangling her.
“She was initially able to scream and feared for her life, believing Johnston intended to kill her as he was very forceful,” said Prosecutor Chris Macintosh. A witness intervened upon hearing her screams, but the situation escalated when Johnston returned outside with a knife, threatening to “finish” her. Grace sustained bruises on her neck and called the authorities, explaining that her husband had tried to kill her.

Johnston was denied bail and remanded in custody by the judge, Lady Drummond, where she condemned the serious nature of his actions:
“You repeatedly strangled her, injured her, and put her life in danger in what must have been absolutely terrifying circumstances for her,”
Initially, Johnston planned to contest the charges at trial but later changed his plea from not guilty to guilty. Reflecting on the gravity of his actions, Lady Drummond said, “I am afraid, Mr. Johnston, that your status has now changed; you have been convicted of a very serious crime.” He is now awaiting sentencing, scheduled for June 6, as he remains in custody.
