An American Catholic priest in the United Kingdom is now under investigation after telling his parishioners that Jesus Christ died on the cross “with an erection.”

According to The Times UK, 53-year-old Father Thomas McHale delivered a “shocking” sermon to the churchgoers at Our Blessed Lady Immaculate in Consett on Good Friday. Parishioners said the priest went into extreme detail about the death of Jesus Christ.
Reportedly, the Catholic priest told his congregation of about 75 to 100 people that because of how crucifixion works, Jesus Christ’s blood would have rushed to his lower body, thus leaving him to die on the cross “with an erection.” One churchgoer told The Times, “He told people Jesus died with an erection. The church was shocked. There were young families there.”

As mentioned, Father Thomas McHale is an American Catholic priest serving in the United Kingdom. It’s reported that he has been working at this parish for more than a decade and despite his jaw-dropping comments about the death of Jesus Christ, he is still working at the church.
Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the diocese of Hexham & Newcastle said, “A complaint was received and has been investigated in keeping with our diocesan complaints policy. The investigation has been very recently completed and the complaint is upheld.”

Aside from the investigation into the Catholic priest over his claim of Jesus Christ dying on the cross “with an erection,” the comment is not too far from a lie in other contexts. Reportedly, “death erections” have been spotted on some men who have died by execution or hanging. It’s said that death by hanging can affect the genitals of both men and women, with men showing a “more or less complete state of erection of the penis, with discharge of urine, mucus, or prostatic fluid.” It’s reportedly, “A frequent occurrence … present for one in three cases.”
Additionally, it’s reported that a 2015 article in Premier Christianity Magazine even told its readers about the “strange physiological reaction,” further calling it, “The final shame of a crucified man.”
