Lucy Letby is a child serial killer who killed infants by physically assaulting them, injecting air into their bloodstream, poisoning them with insulin, and overfeeding them with milk. Per a report by The Guardian, Letby is currently incarcerated at the HMP Low Newton, a high-security prison in Durham, England. She has been booked at this prison house since her conviction in August 2023.

A former neonatal nurse at Chester Hospital in Cheshire, England, Lucy Letby was accused of 22 counts of murder and attempted murder. Reporting about an instance of attempted murder, People Magazine noted that Letby tried to attack a baby while the nurse who was assigned to care for her was on a break. A doctor revealed during the trial that she overfed the baby with milk. Moreover, the amount of milk that was fed to the baby could not have been an accident.

The parents of a victim accused Letby of attempting to kill their infant three times. They alleged that the former nurse gave the baby an excess of air and clear liquid, endangering the child’s life in the process. The murder attempts reportedly led to the baby going through irreversible brain damage and quadriplegia cerebral palsy. She also attempted to murder a different set of triplets. She managed to kill two of them and tried to kill the third.

During another murder, she reportedly refused help from a co-worker who offered to take a look at the struggling infant. This raised suspicions about her intentions. After killing the babies, she reportedly cried sometimes. She also bathed and dressed the babies’ bodies for burial, AP News reported.

When was the child serial killer convicted?

Lucy Letby was convicted of killing seven newborn babies and attempting to kill six others. The New Yorker reported that Letby’s trial was one of the longest trials in English history, receiving much public attention. After she was accused, the British government’s Health Secretary announced that they would lead an investigation into how the hospital allowed the consistent killing of babies.

An investigation followed after a high number of deaths were reported in the neonatal care unit of Chester Hospital in 2016. Experts also could not identify a medical explanation for the high number of deaths. According to The New York Times, the hospital lacked proper staffing, adequate employment in the senior staff members, and poor decision-making in the neonatal care unit. When no solid reason for the deaths was found, the hospital contacted authorities in 2017. Police reportedly said that they were examining the medical records that might reveal other cases of Letby causing harm to the patients.

People Magazine noted that Letby was allegedly in charge of most of the babies who were killed. One of the doctors at the hospital claimed that he saw the nurse watching over an infant with a dislodged breathing tube. She was reportedly watching as the infant’s oxygen levels dropped without doing anything about it. Letby was arrested three times before her final conviction in 2018, 2019, and 2020. Her trial began in October 2022, and she was finally convicted on August 18, 2023. Three days later, she received her sentence.

How much prison time did Lucy Letby get?

The outlet reported that Lucy Letby was sentenced to life in prison on August 21, 2023. Aside from medical records, social media history, text messages to friends, handwritten notes, staffing schedules, and diaries, police reportedly found several notes at her residence that consisted of a confession.

They also discovered sheets of paper containing some of the names of her victims, per NBC News. Furthermore, authorities found out that Lucy Letby had searched extensively about the parents of the children she had killed. She often stalked them on social media.

Letby pleaded not guilty, and her defense team argued that the deaths were a result of a system that was inefficient and was looking for someone to blame, BBC reported. The former nurse reportedly appealed her conviction and is waiting for approval. If her request is denied, it will be the end of her appeals process, according to The New Yorker.

A report by CNN noted that consultants raised their concerns over the rising mortality rate in the hospital. However, the management allegedly ignored the concerns. Lucy Letby reportedly complained against her employers. This was because she was relocated owing to the accusations against her in the neonatal ward. She was put on clerical duties a little while after the triplets were attacked.
