Gypsy Rose Blanchard Is Enjoying Pool Time Amid New Freedom

Gypsy Rose Blanchard continues to enjoy life after prison, most recently having a pool day with her stepmom, Kristy.

As The Blast previously reported, in 2016, Gypsy accepted a plea deal and was sentenced to 10 years in prison for second-degree murder for her involvement in her mother’s death.

After being released on parole in December 2023, Gypsy has made up for lost time as she reconnects with her family and experiences “normal” life events.

Gypsy Rose Blanchard is believed to be a victim of Munchausen syndrome by proxy, a condition in which a caregiver fabricates or induces illness in a person under their care. Her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard, put her through years of unnecessary medical treatments and surgeries, convincing everyone, including doctors, that Gypsy had numerous health issues, such as leukemia and muscular dystrophy, among others.

Dee Dee controlled Gypsy by isolating her and using her alleged illnesses to get sympathy and financial support. Gypsy was often confined to a wheelchair and had a feeding tube, even though it turned out that she was physically healthy.

Desperate to escape her mother’s control, Gypsy planned to kill Dee Dee with the help of her then-boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, whom she met online. After spending eight and a half years behind bars, Gypsy is now a free woman, and many are following her and supporting her due to her troubling childhood.

The ex-convict has been sharing a glimpse into her life post-prison with her followers on social media, including her recent family outing.

“Family memories,” she captioned the post, which included three photos.

The first was of Gypsy holding a guitar as her dad, Rod, stood behind her. The second was a candid shot of Gypsy and her stepmom, Kristy, sitting around a table and enjoying seafood. The last picture was a solo shot of the ex-convict seated in a rocking chair, wearing a gray t-shirt and white shorts.

The ex-convict seems to really be making up for lost time as she continues hanging out with her family, including her stepmom. On Tuesday, May 21, Gypsy and Kristy snapped a selfie as they lounged poolside and soaked up the sun.

“Chill’n by the pool,” Gypsy captioned the post, which also included a selfie of Gypsy taking a dip in the pool.

Gypsy and her stepmom have become very close over the years. In her Mother’s Day video, Gypsy mentioned her stepmom, saying she has been the “biggest advocate for my freedom, my growth, me and my stepmom have a really close bond.”

“She has always stood beside me,” she added. “Whether I made wrong choices, right choices, she might not always agree with my choices, but she does what she can to guide me as a mother figure.”

After spending nearly ten years behind bars, Gypsy reflected on the decision to murder her mom.

“If I had another chance to redo everything, I don’t know if I would go back to when I was a child and tell my aunts and uncles that I’m not sick and mommy makes me sick,” she told PEOPLE Magazine, “or, if I would travel back to just the point of that conversation with Nick and tell him, ‘You know what, I’m going to go tell the police everything.’ I kind of struggle with that.”

“Nobody will ever hear me say I’m glad she’s dead or I’m proud of what I did. I regret it every single day,” she added.

The ex-convict also recalled what it was like growing up under her mother’s care. “Obviously, I knew that I could walk and didn’t need a feeding tube, but everything else was a really big confusion for me,” she told the magazine, specifically talking about her epilepsy diagnosis.

“Whenever I’d question it my mother would say I’d had a seizure the night before and didn’t remember. There was always an excuse,” she added.
