Sony Pictures seems pretty confident in their upcoming R-rated Marvel film Kraven The Hunter, which stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson.
The movie was originally set to be released on January 13, 2023, it was later pushed back to October 6, and then was delayed to August 30, 2024. Kraven The Hunter was then pushed to December 13th.
So, why did the studio push the film back all the way to December? Producer Matt Tolmach said that it’s because it will be released in a period where audiences have time to go to the movies over and over again. Yes, they think people will spend their time over the holidays watching Kravan multiple times.
Tolmach told Collider in an interview: “Kraven moved to Christmas because we’re excited about it and Christmas is the best release period there is, when you get people with time to go back to the movies over and over again.”
He added: “That was a real reflection of how the studio felt about the movie. We’re really excited. But that’s a great move that reflects just the feeling about the movie.”
What they fail to understand is that going to the movies is expensive right now, and it costs a lot of money for people to go to the movies over and over again. This is also during the time of year where people are already spending a lot of money on gifts and traveling.
Also, the holidays are busy and there’s a lot of family time. For me, I’m lucky if I get out to see one movie during the holidays! There’s so much going on! Watching any movie in the theaters multiple times in theaters during this time of year isn’t going to happen.
I will say, this movie does look better than the other non-Spider-Man Marvel films that Sony has released, but we’ll just have to wait and see because Sony does not have the best track record with these movies. They seem excited about it, though!
The movie is described as “the visceral story about how and why one of Marvel’s most iconic villains came to be.”
The story is also said to be set “before his notorious vendetta with Spider-Man,” which mean this movie could actually lead to the character facing off with Spider-Man, which makes me happy because that’s what I want to see!
In Kraven the Hunter, Russian immigrant Sergei Kravinoff is on a mission to prove that he is the greatest hunter in the world. Taylor-Johnson called the project “a Marvel movie grounded heavily in the real world. We know he is a fierce hunter, a highly trained killer.” He excitedly proclaimed, “F**k yeah, it will be rated R!”
J.C. Chandor is directing the movie from a script by Art Marcum and Matt Holloway (Iron Man), and it also stars Ariana DeBose as Calypso, Russell Crowe as Nikolai Kravinoff, Fred Hechinger as Chameleon, Alessandro Nivola as an unknown villain, Levi Miller, and Catch-22 star Christopher Abbott as the main villain, The Foreigner.
Kraven the Hunter arrives in theaters on October 6, 2023.
