There’s tons of outrage online right now after AMC Theatres CEO Adam Aron did an interview with Variety about his leadership and his efforts to keep the entertainment company financially afloat post-pandemic. Speaking with the entertainment news site, Aron said that he has been trying to combat decreased ticket sales following the 2020 pandemic which led to a subsequent inflation crisis sparking strikes and a recent decline in Hollywood studio productions.
While trying to wrangle in more customers, the AMC Theatres CEO said that when he learned that both Beyoncé (with ‘Renaissance‘) and Taylor Swift (with ‘Eras‘) had major concert films getting ready to roll out, and with his company first, he knew he’d be set.

It’s no secret that both of these stars’ global fanbases are willing to drop a bag to see them in concert and would do the same to see all of the behind-the-scenes work that led up to them shutting down stages across the world. So, this would become a huge turning point financially for AMC Theatres, however, the arrangement would eventually spark chaos.
AMC Theatres CEO Adam Aron admitted that when he and his company were chosen to exclusively sell tickets first for Beyoncé’s ‘Renaissance‘ concert film and Taylor Swift’s ‘Eras‘ concert film, he and his company were sworn to secrecy by both camps, as neither wanted to derail plans for successful and profitable rollouts.

While the AMC Theatres CEO respected Taylor Swift and her boundaries, his promise to secrecy with Beyoncé’s concert film wasn’t quietly kept. AMC was the only theater chain to know about the existence of those films in advance, so that they could put tickets on sale first, so when other theater companies and their owners found out about the arrangements with AMC and the two megastars, they obviously felt slighted.
Aron said, “We couldn’t blow Taylor’s secret. And those theater chains who groused to you? They grossed $100 million in ticket sales. It’s not like they sold diddly.” So, to soften the blow to the other theaters, before Beyoncé’s film went on sale, AMC gave its competition a “super-secret-heads-up,” essentially telling them to get ready to put tickets on sale for Bey, whose film dropped two months after Taylor Swift’s.

Aron said, “At least half a dozen movie circuits leaked the news. Beyoncé was seriously thinking about not doing the movie at all because the secret was blown. So, they didn’t keep their word.”
After Taylor Swift’s ‘The Eras Tour‘ concert film launched, it made history becoming the highest-grossing concert film ever with $261 million globally. Aron said, “And it was really good. It got an ‘A+’ on CinemaScore and 98% on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s not like we threw together some garbage.” Reportedly, Beyoncé’s film brought in just over $44 million at the box office, which is a drastic contrast to Swift’s success.
