10 Movies That Were Secretly Sequels

Todd McFarlane has had some fun with comic book character crossover stories in the past with Spawn including Witchblade and Batman. But, fans have wondered over the years if McFarlane would ever get around to a Spider-Man/Spawn crossover.

As you know, McFarlane had an incredible run with Spider-Man at Marvel Comics in the late ‘80s/early ‘90s before leaving and launching Image Comics, which is where he gave birth to Spawn. It would be pretty awesome to see what that story would look like!

The question is, is this something that McFarlane will eventually get around to? McFarlane has collaborated with Marvel on various projects over the years and during an interview with CB, the comic artist was asked if these collaborations might lead to a Spider-Man/Spawn crossover comic.

McFarlane said: “I don’t know if it will. I have conversations with Marvel on a semi-regular basis, and that’s the only topic of conversation we have. Usually, it’s a 20-second conversation. It’s like, ‘Todd, are you any closer to thinking about it?’ And it’s like, ‘No, not really.'”

So, it seems like Marvel would love the crossover to happen, but it’s a project that McFarlane isn’t personally prepared to take on yet.

Unlike Spawn/Batman and Batman/Spawn, McFarlane wants to handle both the writing and art duties when he does tell this Spider-Man/Spawn story.

He explained: “It’s a massive undertaking for me because it has to be Spider-Man/Spawn, and I have to do all the artwork. Anything less than that is not doing it proper.

“So I just have to be able to see myself clear to be able to devote the time needed and not feel like I’m a little bit here, and a little bit here, and I’m rushing it, because it will show on paper.

“I need to be able to channel all the things that people like in my artwork when I was doing it on a regular basis and put it back on the paper.”

We’ll just have to wait and see if McFarlane ever make that commitment commit that kind of time to developing this story, but as of right now, it’s a project that he’s not really thinking about it.

McFarlane paid homage to his covers for 1987’s Amazing Spider-Man #298 and Amazing Spider-Man #299 with Spawn #298 and #299 during “War to 300”.

In 2020, McFarlane shared a “momentous occasion in comic book history”, which was his first official artwork featuring Spider-Man and Spawn together. It was for a cover for the Overstreet Price Guide, and that’s what initially got fans super excited about a possible crossover comic.
