In a recent interview with @CNN International’s Christiane Amanpour, Grammy Award-winning artist John Legend shared his reaction to the horrific video showing Diddy’s assault on Cassie Ventura and the mountain of allegations made against the rapper.
As we previously reported, the allegations against the music mogul came to light in a November 2023 lawsuit and it resurfaced again after hotel surveillance footage from 2016 was released by CNN, showing Combs physically assaulting his then-girlfriend.
Speaking for the first time on the controversy surrounding Diddy, who he collaborated with on his last album, Legend, said: “I was horrified by the descriptions that I read before the video evidence came out.” He continued, “And absolutely it’s something that needs to be brought to light when it happens. My default stance is to believe women when they make these accusations and to make sure that we do whatever we can to support women” making them, Legend said. He added that his hope is “that they’re heard and that any kind of accountability and reparations can be made to make these women whole again,” CNN quotes.
Legend went on to express his hope that the victims of assault receive the justice they deserve and that their voices are heard. “It’s quite a shame,” the singer said. “I really just want accountability and hopefully some healing for all of his victims.”
“Music is not dead in Afghanistan right now, even though the Taliban’s back in charge.”
In his new podcast Afghan Star, @johnlegend examines a groundbreaking Afghan talent show that took the country by storm in the 2000s.

The 2016 Incident and Lawsuits:
The 2016 assault incident involving Combs and Ventura was first mentioned in Ventura’s lawsuit filed in November 2023. Although Combs denied the allegations outlined in the lawsuit, it was settled out of court just one day after being filed. However, after the release of the footage, Diddy posted a video apology, admitting to his wrongdoings.
Ventura’s case is just one of eight civil lawsuits naming Combs as the defendant, all containing allegations of sexual assault.
John Legend’s Podcast Series:
Aside from this, during the interview, Legend also discussed his new podcast series, “Afghan Star.”
The podcast tells the inspiring story behind the competition reality show of the same name, which sought talented singers across Afghanistan.
“It’s a beautiful story of the power of music, the power of the people’s resilience, and a really remarkable show that was pretty revolutionary for its time,” legend said. “It really captured the attention of the nation… I find the story inspiring, but also it really shows you the power of music and the power of the human spirit.”
