Over the weekend, a controversial play unfolded during the matchup between Chicago Sky and Indiana Fever, as guard Chennedy Carter made a physical play on star player Caitlin Clark.
Carter was penalized with a common foul by the referees, but her reluctance to address the incident in the postgame press conference raised eyebrows. Overall, the WNBA officials reviewed the play and decided to elevate the foul to a flagrant level post-game. Austin Rivers, the son of Milwaukee Bucks head coach Doc Rivers and a former NBA player, took to social media to share his thoughts on the incident involving Caitlin Clark and the actions of players in the WNBA towards her. In a video post, Rivers expressed his views on the play and the treatment of Clark, sparking a conversation online.

“This woman comes along and brings the world in, and is now giving y’all that proper attention and respect … and instead of being appreciative and acknowledging that, you guys are coming at her with these hate-ass comments, talking about ‘it’s not just because of her, blah, blah, blah,’” Rivers said. “It’s not a coincidence. It’s the Caitlin Clark-effect,” he continued. “And it’s not because she’s white. It’s not because she’s straight, good God no one cares [about that] … it’s because she’s an unbelievable basketball player and talent. It’s because she has a [basketball style] that we’ve never really seen before [in women’s basketball].”
On the flip side, Matt Barnes took a contrasting approach by highlighting the inadequate support provided by Clark’s teammates during the physical altercations. Barnes voiced his disapproval towards the Indiana Fever players for their failure to protect their standout athlete.
Reflecting on his own NBA career, Barnes recounted instances where he stood up for his teammates and stressed the significance of unity and camaraderie within a team. Expressing disappointment in the Fever players for not rallying around Clark, he implied that their failure to show solidarity could be a contributing factor to the team’s performance struggles in the league.
Barnes emphasized that physicality is inherent in basketball but underscored the obligation of teammates to defend and support one another, particularly when it comes to key players like Clark. He pointed out the absence of this team cohesion and protection within the Fever roster as a potential reason for their lackluster standing in the league.
