On Thursday near an Evansville daycare, there was a concerning incident as individuals repossessing a vehicle failed to notice a young child inside before driving off. The child’s mother immediately contacted the police in a panic, seeking assistance in locating her child.
According to Sergeant Nick Winsett of the Evansville Police Department, the child’s mother initially expressed concerns that her child may have been abducted. However, earlier in the day on Thursday, two repossession agents had contacted central dispatch to notify law enforcement that they would take possession of the mother’s vehicle if the chance presented itself. The mother was dropping her older son off at daycare when she left her 7-day-old child in the car while it was running.

Upon entering the vehicle and driving off, one of the men seemed oblivious to the fact that a young child was securely fastened in a safety seat just a few feet behind him. Dispatchers promptly contacted the repossession agents again, alerting them to the situation and the child’s presence inside the car that had been repossessed. “As far as the infant being inside, they had no idea about that,” Winsett said. “Once dispatch called them back, they pulled over right away.”
The men reportedly met with Evansville police at Wolfe’s Auto Auction, located about a five-minute drive southeast of the daycare, where the infant was successfully reunited with their mother, as confirmed by central dispatch.

At that time, the repossession agency employing the men remained unidentified. Sergeant Winsett stated that as of Thursday, there were no indications of charges being filed against any party involved in the incident.
“This sounds like it was a huge mistake,” Winsett said. “From now on, they’ll probably check that back seat before they drive off.”
