David Henrie is teasing the Wizards of Waverly Place sequel series and his reunion with Selena Gomez.
In a new interview, Henrie shared details on working with Gomez after 10 years since the original series was wrapped with a Disney Channel television movie.
“It was awesome. We didn’t want it to end. It was great,” Henrie told Us Weekly in an interview. “She’s so good. She has such a quick wit that’s only gotten stronger.”
Henrie and Gomez are set to reprise their roles as Justin and Alex Russo, respectively, in the sequel series tentatively titled Wizards.
“We have a couple scenes that I think will choke up the original fan of the original show, and they’re really touching, and they went really well. So, I’m excited for you to see it,” Henrie teased.
In the follow-up series, an adult Justin Russo (Henrie), has chosen to lead a normal, mortal life with his family, Giada (Mimi Gianopulos), Roman (Alkaio Thiele), and Milo (Max Matenko). When Justin’s sister Alex (Gomez) brings Billie (Janice LeAnn Brown) to his home seeking help, Justin realizes he must dust off his magical skills to mentor the wizard-in-training while also juggling his everyday responsibilities – and safeguarding the future of the Wizard World.
The Russo kids’ father, Jerry Russo, played by David DeLuise, will also reprise his role in the sequel series.
“It was a joy,” Henrie said. “And we hope to have everyone back throughout the lifetime of the show, and if it’s up to me, as often as possible ‘cause they’re just such a wonderful addition.”
Henrie said that fans will have to tune in to the show to find out how his character lost his powers as it “may or may not have been against his will.” In addition, he said the “new cast is really, really talented,” noting that his “goal is [to] recreate the heart of the original show so anyone can watch it and go, ‘This is Wizards. This feels like the themes, the values, the world, the comedy. This is Wizards.”
