During the 2024 CNN Presidential Debate on Thursday evening (June 27), Donald Trump and Joe Biden spoke on the historic January 6, 2021 Capitol attack — for which Trump denies full culpability and claims he tried to send 10,000 soldiers to prevent.

Trump further claimed that the United States “was respected all over the world” on January 6, before Biden took office and left us “laughed at” as if we’re “a bunch of stupid people.” When CNN debate moderator Jake Tapper asked Donald Trump about condemning the insurrectionists of the Capitol attack or other relevant questions, he denied culpability and slammed Joe Biden. He said, “Let me tell you about January 6. On January 6, we had a great border, nobody coming through, very few.”

Trump added, “On January 6, we became energy independent. On January 6, we had the lowest taxes ever. We had the lowest regulations ever. On January 6, we were respected all over the world. All over the world, we were respected. And then he comes in and we’re now laughed at. We’re like a bunch of stupid people. What happened to the United States’ reputation under this man’s leadership is horrible, including weaponization — which I’m sure at one point, you’ll be talking about, where he goes after his political opponent because he can’t beat them fair and square.”

During the debate segment on the Capitol riots, President Joe Biden further asked former President Donald Trump to denounce the far-right Proud Boys gang and other rioters who attacked the U.S. Capitol, being that he claims no responsibility. After being asked, Trump remained silent.

Before being pressed by Joe Biden, Donald Trump repeatedly placed blame for the Capitol attack on former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, claiming she turned down his offer to send National Guard troops, which are under the command of the president. He further claimed that Pelosi is on tape claiming to take “responsibility,” however the clip he references is of Pelosi saying she “takes responsibility for not having them just prepare for more” that day.
