Eddie Murphy recently recalled the time fellow comedians Robin Williams and John Belushi allegedly offered him coke (cocaine), which he turned down and thanked God for “looking over [him].”

While speaking with the New York Times’ ‘The Interview‘ podcast, 63-year-old comedian and actor Eddie Murphy alleged that late comedians John Belushi and Robin Williams once tried to get him to do coke back in the ’80s. However, the ‘Beverly Hills Cop‘ star said he declined the offer and is very thankful that he did.
During Murphy’s interview, published on Saturday (June 29), he said, “I remember I was 19, I went to the Blues Bar. It was me, [John] Belushi, and Robin Williams. They took coke out and started doing coke. And I was like, ‘Oh no, I’m cool.’”

Murphy, who got his start in the business at 19 on ‘Saturday Night Live,’ continued to explain that every so often he will remember that moment and be thankful that he didn’t oblige and take part in the other comedians’ alleged extra-curricular festivities. He said, “Every now and then, over the years, I will trip about that moment. Because I was really young and it was so easy to try some coke.”
While explaining why he declined the alleged offer to take cocaine from John Belushi and Robin Williams, Eddie Murphy insisted, “I wasn’t taking some moral stance. I just wasn’t interested in it.” He added, “To not have the desire or the curiosity of it, I’d say that’s providence. God was looking over me in that moment—where I didn’t make a left turn.”

As reported by Page Six, Murphy continued to describe the rise and fall of several stars and peers like Elvis Presley, and Michael Jackson, even using John Belushi and Robin Williams as “cautionary tales.” Belushi would end up passing away from a heroin overdose at the age of 33 in 1982, while Williams took his own life in 2014 at the age of 63.
Additionally, the King Of Pop and King of Rock ‘N’ Roll also died unexpectedly and prematurely. Jackson died at the age of 50 in 2009 of acute propofol intoxication, while Presley died at the age of 42 in 1977 of a heart attack.
Murphy, who admitted that he never took up drinking and only tried marijuana at 30, continued, “When you get famous really young, especially a Black artist, it’s like living in a minefield. Any moment something could happen that can undo everything. It was like, all of this stuff is going on, and I’m totally oblivious. Now, at this age, I can look back and be like, ‘Wow, I came through a minefield for 35 years.’ How do you make it through a minefield for 35, or 40 years? Something has to be looking over you.”
