Former VIBE Magazine Editor-In-Chief Danyel Smith recently alleged Sean “Diddy” Combs threatened to kill her after a disagreement over a 1997 magazine cover.
The New York Times reports that the Bad Boy CEO reportedly intimidated the journalist after a dispute over his December 1997/January 1998 double-issue covers.

Diddy Allegedly Threatened The Editor of VIBE Magazine
Danyel stated that they shot Combs for the cover of the mag, and a few days after the photo shoot, he asked to see the image they chose to use before publication. However, Smith informed him that this was against their company’s policy. She said, “After I told him no, we heard that he planned to come to our office and force us to show him what we’d chosen — and to make us choose something else if he didn’t like what he saw.”
Danyel claimed they implemented a safety plan if the rapper pulled up to the office. Diddy reportedly had a reputation for getting rowdy. The year prior, he was found guilty of criminal mischief. Sean allegedly threatened a New York Post photographer with a weapon. Additionally, there were rumors that he attacked a woman at his record label’s office.
Smith alleges Combs called her again, requesting to see the photos. She reiterated that it was not VIBE’s policy, and Diddy responded by threatening that he would see her “dead in the trunk of a car.” Danyel didn’t take the threat lying down. She contacted her attorney, who then reached out to Sean. An apology fax reportedly arrived within two hours.
