CBS is producing a new workplace comedy series set at Area 51 with James Wan’s Atomic Monster. The series is being developed by God Friended Me creators Steven Lilien and Bryan Wynbrandt with the former The Neighborhood writer-producer Laura Moran.
The series is titled Area 51, and it’s a single-camera series that “follows the humans and Aliens that work together at the country’s most mysterious place.”
There’s not much more information beyond that, but a workplace comedy set at Area 51 could be a lot of fun! It would be even more interesting if the series was set in the 50s or 60s during the height of all the activity that went on there.
Area 51 has become less interesting these days as most of the top-secret military projects are set at Dugway Proving Ground.
The report explains that for studios, “single-camera comedies are hard to justify financially because of their higher cost and depressed network license fees.”
When talking about that, CBS Studios President David Stapf said: “It’s pretty challenging. You never know. I hate to say no, we’ll never do another single camera for CBS and then something great can walk in the door and we’re going to do so.”
It looks like they see something great in this Area 51 series. I hope it’s good!
