As Daktyl, like many artists, navigates the turbulent waters of a career in music, his new EP emerges as an indication of creative clarity.

With a distinguished career marked by collaborations with Diplo, What So Not and many other dance heavyweights, Daktyl continues to be the gold standard for indie-electronic music. He reinforces that reputation with Wave, out now on San Holo’s bitbird imprint.

Opening with “We Lost Track Of Time,” the EP immediately sets a playful yet introspective tone. This track is a fluttery cascade of vocal chops and light, airy production, punctuated by reassuring ad-libs that wrap around the listener like a comforting embrace. It’s an invitation to drift away and lose yourself in the haze of the music.

The titular “Wave,” featuring the talented Alice Ivy, sweeps in with rhythmic vocal chops and lead synths with vocaloid-like textures. The track ebbs and flows, much like the emotional tides it aims to represent, drawing us into its current. Meanwhile, “Idols,” a collaboration with Lizzy Land, shifts the EP into funkier territory. Twangy strings dance around pitch-bending melodies, creating wavy tones that mix seamlessly with a kinetic undercurrent. It’s a track that grooves with a sense of freedom and playfulness, inviting listeners to find their rhythm within the chaos.

Closing the EP is “Little Light,” a track that cuts through the noise with its poignant lyrics and soulful vocal delivery from Zeke Finn, whose lyrics paint a vivid picture of finding one’s true calling amidst the turbulence of modern life.

“This EP is kind of an ode to that presence and the realization that it’s kind of all that matters,” Daktyl said in a press release. “It was also born from the realization that we have more control over our emotions and our actions than we are led to believe. Life can feel overwhelming and draining in modern times, but realizing it’s all just a wave is the first step in accepting it as it is and making the most of it.”
