Former daytime talk show host and actor Montell Williams, who once dated Vice President Kamala Harris, has extended his support to the 59-year-old Democrat. Despite their past relationship and current separate paths, Williams took a moment to back Harris as she intensified her campaign efforts to become the first female president.
On July 22, Williams, who is relatively quiet on social media, retweeted a message from Maryland Governor Wes Moore announcing his endorsement of Harris. “Today, I am proud to voice my full support and offer my full endorsement to Vice President @KamalaHarris to be the Democratic Nominee for President of the United States,” Moore’s message read.
The 68-year-old TV icon followed up with another post, clarifying his support for the first Black and South Asian VP’s presidential bid. “Reminding folks I RT’d this,” he penned.
Williams’ heartfelt post to Harris followed closely on the heels of the political leader’s remarkable achievement in raising $250 million for her presidential campaign as she strives for the Democratic nomination. Yet amid her groundbreaking campaign efforts, social media trolls circulated an old video of Harris and Williams holding hands at a red carpet event. In the viral footage, Harris is seen beaming in a striking plunging white gown, standing alongside the talk show host and his daughter, who is seen holding his hand on the left.
As the old footage made its rounds across the internet, Williams hopped on X to inform media outlets that he would not answer questions about his former relationship with the vice president.
“I’ve said what I’m going to say about the thing that keeps trending,” Williams penned in a since-deleted X post, according to Complex. “My friends in the media should think twice about wasting time on a 20+-year-old picture – you will find doing so will earn an unpleasant reaction.”
This isn’t the first time that Montell Williams and Harris’ relationship has piqued the interest of netizens.
The same footage of the politician and Williams surfaced in 2019, and at the time, the former offered some details about his romantic past with the Democrat when she was running for vice president. “@KamalaHarris and I briefly dated about 20 years ago when we were both single. So what? I have great respect for Sen. Harris. I have to wonder if the same stories about her dating history would have been written if she were a male candidate?” he wrote.
In May, Williams discussed his relationship with Harris during an appearance on The Adam Corolla Show. While he stated firmly that he doesn’t “kiss and tell,” The Montell Williams Show star praised the Democrat, noting how she’s extremely smart and hardworking.
