James Gunn recently offered an update on his Superman, and in the process, he suggests that while there’s still a long way to go to finish the film, there may not be any reshoots.
A fan reached out to Gunn on Threads and asked, “Would you also say that you’re 98% done with Superman?”
Gunn replied, saying: “Heck no. Once you’re done shooting you’ve only just begun! Still lots of editing, VFX, sound, and scoring to be done!”
Most of these big-budget superhero movies go through reshoots. Marvel Studios and the previous DC regime have been notorious for reshoots, but Gunn doesn’t think that Superman will need any.
He went on to explain his process for avoiding reshoots:
1) Over-prepare
2) Don’t start shooting until I have a finished script my whole team is happy with
3) Hire actors and department heads I know can do their jobs
4) Surround myself with people who will challenge me and not just yes-sir everything
5) Ask myself daily – are there any small imperfections in the script or what we’re shooting that might end up feeling like huge imperfections when we cut the film together?
6) 1 and 2 again!
Gunn gets it. He’s one of the few filmmakers in Hollywood that actually understands that story matters, and that a solid completed script is a must have before a film should even start shooting.
It seems so simple, yet most studios do not work with this way and it’s why a lot of movies have issues and fall short of reaching their true potential.
When Gunn wrapped production on the movie, he said: “And that’s a wrap. God bless our cast and crew whose commitment, creativity, and hard work have brought this project to life.
“I set out to make a movie about a good man in a world that isn’t always so much. And the goodness and kindness and love I’ve encountered on a daily basis on the set has inspired me and thrust me forward when I felt too spent to move on my own.
“Thank you all from the bottom of my heart. It has been an honor. The destination has been Superman, but the journey has been the toil and the laughter and the emotions and ideas and magic we’ve shared together on set – and for that I am forever grateful.”
Superman will tell the story of “Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”
Superman also stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane; Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor; Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern; Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl; Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt / Mr. Terrific; Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen; María Gabriela de Faría as Angela Spica, aka The Engineer; Sara Sampaio, as Eve Teschmacher; and Terence Rosemore as Otis.
Superman will launch the movie part of DC Studios’ Gods and Monsters: Part 1. It’s scheduled for a theatrical release on July 11, 2025.
