A man was arrested on Thursday after he crashed his car almost entirely into a local church on Scenic Highway.

The incident took place at Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church. Authorities identified the driver as 26-year-old Tervont Johnson. He reportedly told officers that he had been “riding with demons” before the crash. His car caught fire immediately after the crash, adding to the chaos. Brother Clifford Young, the church’s secretary, described the scene as terrifying and surreal, according to WRBZ.
“I just saw all the water coming out of the sprinkler system and a cloud of smoke… and my brother noticed there was a car in the sanctuary”, he explained to the outlet. Mike Harris, another witness, reported seeing the Tella speeding through the church’s parking lot before crashing into the building.

The Baton Rouge Police Department stated that Johnson seemed incoherent when he was arrested. After being informed of his Miranda Rights, he waived his right to counsel and confessed to crashing his car. An affidavit disclosed that the fire from the crash caused around $100,000 worth of damage to the church. Additionally, officers found a significant amount of marijuana in Johnson’s vehicle.
He was arrested and charged with aggravated criminal damages to property and drug-related offenses due to the drug found in his car. Johnson was also charged with simple arson in connection to the fire.
