Warner Bros. has released a new teaser trailer for upcoming DC movie Joker: Folie à Deux, and it offers us a new look at what we can expect from the upcoming sequel.
The teaser includes new footage of Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck and Lady Gaga’s take on Harley Quinn. The casting director for the film previously opened up about how surprised audiences are going to be by Gaga’s performance.
She said: “She’s so good in it, you guys. She’s going to blow your mind. I didn’t suggest Lady Gaga. It wasn’t my idea. That was Todd Phillps before me.
“But I will tell you, she’s really surprising — and really good. I saw it and I was really surprised. I mean, we all knew what she could do in A Star is Born, but I thought, ‘Oh, well, that’s kind of in her wheelhouse.’
“Something she could do and just be real. But this… Man, she’s good. Joaquin blows your mind, but that she could keep up with him, and be real — and not just wiped off the screen by what that role is and what the performance is — shows she’s good.”
In the film, Arthur Fleck is institutionalized at Arkham awaiting trial for his crimes as Joker. While struggling with his dual identity, Arthur not only stumbles upon true love, but also finds the music that’s always been inside him.
Arthur’s true love in the film is Harley Quinn who forms a strong relationship with Joker and together they embark on a journey filled with violence and music.
The film was directed by Todd Phillips and the early reviews for the film have been strong.
When talking about the musical aspect of the film, Phillips said that most of the musical action in the movie happens in Arthur Fleck’s mind.
He said: “I just don’ want people to think that it’s like In The Heights, where the lady in the Bodega starts to sing and they take it out onto the street, and the police are dancing. No disrespect, because I loved In The Heights.”
Gaga added: “We asked ourselves what would need to be true for two people to just break into song in the middle of a conversation? Where does the music come from when no one can hear it but the characters? Neither Arthur nor Lee are professional singers, and they shouldn’t sound like they are.”
The movie is said to be inspired by Francis Ford Coppola’s infamous 1982 movie flop One from the Heart. Lawrence Sher praised director Phillips for going bold on the sequel, saying: “Something I appreciate about Todd Phillips — who I’ve done seven movies with, including Joker — is that he’s always taking risks. We’ve got the new Joker coming out next year and we’re just finishing up post-production on it. This movie is a big swing and it’s going to be really surprising to people. I’m so excited for everyone to see it.”
The movie also stars Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn, Zazie Beetz as Sophie Dumond, with Catherine Keener, Jacob Lofland, and Brendan Gleeson who will be playing undisclosed characters.
