In Hulu’s upcoming ‘Child Star’ documentary — which marks Demi Lovato’s directorial debut alongside Nicola Marsh — the Disney Channel alum came out with the shocking allegations.

In a new trailer for the Hulu documentary teased on Thursday (September 6), Lovato – who uses they/them and she/her pronouns – said, “The popular girls signed a suicide petition saying that I should kill myself.” Demi Lovato neglected to reveal the identities of the “popular girls” who allegedly signed the “petition.”

Not much more was revealed in the trailer about the 32-year-old singer and actress, but she began acting at a very young age. One of her very first appearances on TV was on ‘Barney & Friends’ from 2002 to 2004. After that, Lovato went on to star in several Disney Channel hit shows and movies like ‘Camp Rock’ and ‘Sonny with a Chance.’ During this time, she was also jumpstarting her career in the music industry.

Prior to her new Hulu documentary ‘Child Star,’ Demi Lovato admitted she was suicidal at just seven years old. In 2013, she shared her shocking confession with Cosmopolitan. At the time, she said, “Even before ‘Barney,’ I was suicidal. I was 7. With ‘Barney,’ I guess subliminally, I did have a relationship with this figure that was saving my life in a way.”

She added, “I’ve talked about being bullied and the years of being a teenager, but I went through things when I was younger that I’ve never talked about that probably caused me to turn out the way I ended up turning out.”

Demi Lovato, who’s been very vocal about her sobriety and other sensitive topics in recent years, also suffered from substance abuse, and in 2018 she experienced a near-fatal overdose.

In her new Hulu documentary ‘Child Star,’ Demi Lovato not only reflects on her early days of fame, but she also shares the screen with fellow child stars like Raven-Symoné, Kenan Thomspon, Drew Barrymore, JoJo Siwa, Christina Ricci, and Alyson Stoner.

While sharing the news of her upcoming doc, Lovato posted to her Instagram on Thursday and said, “Growing up in the spotlight changed our lives forever. Thank you to all of the former child stars who shared their stories with me in my directorial debut and new documentary.”
