Marcee Gray — the mother of the 14-year-old suspect who was charged as an adult in the fatal shooting of four people at Georgia’s Apalachee High School — reportedly called her son’s school to warn them of an “extreme emergency” moments before her son opened fire.

Law enforcement officials said that on Wednesday morning (September 4), 14-year-old Apalachee High School shooting suspect Colt Gray opened fire on the campus in Winder, Georgia. Authorities responded to the call at about 10:30 a.m.; however, the suspect’s mother, Marcee Gray, apparently made a phone call to the school at 9:50 a.m., according to The Washington Post.

On Saturday (September 7), the news publication reported that Ms. Gray’s sister, Annie Brown, claimed the suspect’s mother called the school on the morning of the attack to warn them of an “extreme emergency.” Ms. Gray reportedly told Ms. Brown in a text message that after the shooting she attempted to notify a counselor at the school.

The Post reported that a call log from the family’s shared phone plan showed a 10-minute call from the mother’s phone to the school at 9:50 a.m., about a half-hour before witnesses claimed a gunman opened fire. Ms. Gray reportedly texted her sister, “I was the one that notified the school counselor at the high school. I told them it was an extreme emergency and for them to go immediately and find [my son] to check on him.”

During the call, a counselor reportedly told Ms. Gray that her son was talking about a school shooting that morning and that officials were visiting his classroom. Moments after the call, the suspect opened fire with an AR-15 style rifle, leaving four people dead (two students and two teachers), plus nine others injured.

According to The Post, the phone log, text messages, and interviews strongly showed that school officials received many notices and concerns about the suspect on the morning of the shooting, and they may have even been looking for him within minutes of the shooting.

Reportedly, text messages also show that the school and the suspect’s family members were in contact about his mental health a week before the shooting. Ms. Brown also told a relative that her nephew was, at the time, having “homicidal and suicidal thoughts.”

Speaking with The Post, Ms. Gray confirmed the details in the texts and phone logs but declined to elaborate on what prompted her call to warn Apalachee High School officials of the “extreme emergency.” However, she admitted that she shared the information with the police. In a text to The Post, she added, “I am so, so sorry and can not fathom the pain and suffering they are going through right now.”
