The Last Dinner Party on the Fresh Rock ‘n’ Roll of the ’70s

Even though they’re around three decades too late to have lived through it themselves, The Last Dinner Party’s favorite decade of sound is the ’70s.

The British indie rockers, whose sound, music, and style are heavily influenced by the rock era, shared their favorite ’70s inspirations with SPIN and Bose for our Decades of Sound collaboration.

Three out of five TLDP members showcased their wide-ranging taste and knowledge of ’70s music, through naming various acts and influences. Bassist Georgia Davies lists Black Sabbath, Kool & the Gang, and Dolly Parton as the top choices for a hypothetical ’70s music festival bill. Then lead singer Abigail Morris says David Bowie, Joni Mitchell, and the Sex Pistols are the most influential artists of the decade.

The band’s flutist and guitarist Emily Roberts appreciates that the ’70s was a decade of musical invention and a time when rock artists were experimenting with various genres.

“I would have loved the idea in the ’70s,” Roberts says, “of the birth of rock ‘n’ roll being so recent that every idea that you write is really fresh and you don’t have decades of rock ‘n’ roll before you. It’s all just new.”

Join us through the Decades of Sound, hearing from impactful artists about their favorite eras of music in celebration of Bose’s 60th anniversary.
