You may know Yvette Young as the leader of Covet, where she plays intuitive, rhythmically complex math rock that pulls away from her classical upbringing. Today, the revered guitarist brings that same drive to her new solo single, “Always,” but emphasizes more emotion than technical intensity, blending ’80s pop and indie rock with rich introspection about looking forward.
The track comes with a winding video, which was shot in Idyllwild, California by Zach Miller (Pool Kids). It features Young cruising on the backs of motorcycles, jamming out lakeside, and wandering through the woods, where she eventually climbs a rock and spreads ashes — an apt metaphor for her new beginnings. Young will also play with American Football in LA next month and appears on the band’s upcoming 25th anniversary covers album.

Reflecting on her new approach, Young says, “It’s about autonomy and reinvention. For the first time in a long time, I feel safe and in control of my art. This era of my life is my anti-pigeonhole era — I’m not just someone who plays guitar really fast. I’m exploring all the different facets of my creativity, from hyperpop to orchestral scores, and beyond.”
