Phoenix shoegazers Glixen have been dripping out songs throughout the year, beginning with “foreversoon” and “lust,” as they worked on their upcoming Quiet Pleasures EP. Today, they’re back with its first single, “Sick Silent,” which marks a crushing leap for the burgeoning four-piece.
The new song was recorded with Sonny DiPerri (My Bloody Valentine, DIIV) in Juniper Hills, California, and features additional vocals from guitarist Esteban Santana, but you’ve never heard Glixen like this. Although bandleader Aislinn Ritchie told us earlier this year that they have “always wanted to be heavy,” the band fall even deeper into a torrential haze that they’ve been live-testing as they round out an enormous year of touring, including upcoming dates with Glare, Turnover, and Tanukichan.

“‘Sick Silent’ is like a meadow in a dark forest, evoking feelings of temporality,” Ritchie says. “There are currents of distortion and reverse reverb enveloped in adrenaline-inducing percussion and hard-hitting basslines with vocals that shine through piercing layers of guitars giving a glimpse of the world that Glixen lives in.”
