Chappell Roan Threatens To ‘Quit’ If Being Famous Gets Too ‘Dangerous’

Rising pop star Chappell Roan opened up about the pressures of fame, recounting a troubling airport incident with harassing fans.

The singer revealed that fame has felt “abusive,” likening it to dealing with an ex-husband.

Despite her music’s recent success, Chappelle Roan admitted she has never cared about charts or radio play, expressing frustration at the industry’s sudden recognition of her work.

MEGAIn a recent interview with The Face magazine, pop music sensation Chappell Roan discussed the pressures of fame and revealed that she might step away from music if the stress becomes too much.

During the chat, Roan shared a troubling experience she had at the airport when an unknown person tried to get her to sign posters.

Recounting the incident, the singer said, ​”I get out of the car, it’s 5:30 in the morning, and two guys are waiting with a bunch of posters and sh-t for me to sign.”

​”I know they’re not fans. I said no. I was like, ​’I don’t sign anything at the airport, I’m sorry,” Roan added.

However, the situation escalated when one of the men followed her to the TSA line, publicly berating her: “He’s like, ​’You should really humble yourself. Do you know where you are right now? Don’t forget where you came from.”

The “Hot To Go” singer shared that she was in disbelief during the ordeal and wondered, “What the f-ck” is going on.

Reflecting on the incident, Roan noted, “I told myself, if this ever gets dangerous, I might quit. It’s dangerous now, and I’m still going. But that part is not what I signed up for.”

During the MTV Video Music Awards last Wednesday, a photographer was heard telling someone to “Shut the f-ck up” while Roan was on the red carpet.

This caused the singer, whose real name is Kayleigh Rose Amstutz, to respond angrily, saying, “You shut the f-ck up. No, not me, b-tch.”

The incident caused some commotion online, with many wondering what exactly caused the fiery exchange.

While speaking to Entertainment Tonight on the red carpet, Roan shed some light on the incident, noting that she was yelled at.

“This is quite overwhelming and quite scary,” she said. “I think for someone who gets a lot of anxiety around people yelling at you … the carpet is horrifying, and I yelled back. You don’t get to yell at me like that.”

Roan went on to describe how the pressures of fame have felt “abusive” to her.

She said, “The vibe of this — stalking, talking sh-t online, [people who] won’t leave you alone, yelling at you in public — is the vibe of an abusive ex-husband. That’s what it feels like. I didn’t know it would feel this bad.”

The singer recalled breaking down in tears during the airport incident and seeking comfort by texting singer Lorde for guidance.

“She sent me a list of things I should do [in that situation],” Roan recalled. ​”Literally wrote down eight things she wished someone would have told her when she was going through it. And she went through f-cking hell. She was a baby!”

In a Rolling Stone cover story published on Tuesday, September 10, Roan opened up about her experiences with predatory behavior and how she’s leaned on fellow artists like Sabrina Carpenter for support.

“We’re both going through something so f-cking hard,” the “Good Luck, Babe!” singer said. “[Carpenter] just feels like everything is flying, and she’s just barely hanging on.”

Roan added, “It was just good to know someone else feels that way.”

Last month,  Roan took to social media to address her concerns about fans overstepping boundaries, urging them to respect her personal space and avoid “nonconsensual physical and social interactions.”

“I just need to lay it out and remind you, women don’t owe you sh-t,” she said on TikTok. “I chose this career path because I love music and art and honoring my inner child, I do not accept harassment of any kind because I chose this path, nor do I deserve it.”

During a conversation with “Saturday Night Live” star Bowen Yang, Roan, who has been performing for larger audiences and recently saw several of her music break into the Billboard charts, reflected on her rise to fame, admitting that despite being popular, she has “never given a f-ck about the charts or being on the radio.”

“The biggest thing has been getting recognized, and just feeling not myself. And touring, it’s all-consuming,” Roan said.

She added, “I’ve never given a f-ck about the charts or being on the radio, but it’s so crazy how industry people are taking me more seriously than before. I’m like, ‘I’ve been doing this the whole time, bitch.'”
