Tyla is determined not to let her back injury derail her music career dreams.

In an exclusive interview with People published on Sept. 23, the “Water” hitmaker shared how she’s coping after having to cancel her 2024 world tour in March due to a severe back injury. Speaking at a Bose event this month, the 22-year-old revealed that her back is slowly improving, and she’s excited to attend and perform at upcoming events while taking her recovery process gradually. Recently, she was spotted at the Met Gala and MTV VMAs, showcasing her resilience.

“It felt so good. It’s been hard not being able to do all that,” Tyla shared. “The little that I’m able to do now, I’m just doing wholeheartedly until I get 100% better.”

According to Health Direct, back injuries can lead to chronic pain, limited mobility, and disability, impacting daily activities and quality of life. They can also result in nerve damage, which may cause numbness or weakness in limbs. In severe cases, untreated injuries can lead to long-term complications like herniated discs or spinal instability. Delving into prevention and treatment is essential for the ultimate recovery, so Tyla is doing the right thing by taking some time off to heal before she jumps back into a busy work and tour schedule.

While the South African performer feels sad about the temporary pause in her career since her meteoric rise to fame in 2019, taking time to rest and recover has given her a fresh perspective on life.

“I feel like some people don’t realize how I’m still very new to all of this,” Tyla shared. “I’m really enjoying having fun on stage and figuring out what I like, what I want to do, what I don’t want to do. When it comes to my tour, I know it’s just going to be amazing. I look forward to that time.”

She added, “Your back is such an important part of your body, so I just want to take my time. I’m looking forward to just getting better and getting stronger. It’s a moment to just pay attention to myself and slow down. I feel like it’s also something that happened because maybe God wants me to slow down, just breathe and take care of myself.”

Tyla is working on new music.

At the 2024 Grammys, Tyla made history by winning the award for Best African Music Performance with her hit song “Water.” It was a significant moment, as it marked the introduction of an all-new category celebrating African music.

Tyla’s victory was a standout among a talented group of nominees, including ASAKE & Olamide with “Amapiano,” Burna Boy’s “City Boys,” Davido featuring Musa Keys on “UNAVAILABLE,” and Ayra Starr’s “Rush.” “Water” also achieved impressive success by topping the Billboard Hot R&B Songs chart in April, showcasing Tyla’s growing influence in the global music scene.

As she waits for her back to heal up, the 22-year-old star has been busy in the studio cooking up new music that sounds completely “different” than what fans may expect.

“I’ve grown so much this year. I’ve evolved in so many different aspects that this new music is going to be that version of me, the now version of Tyla,” she said.

Rest up, Tyla! We can’t wait to hear your new music.
