Why Jack Ryan Spin-off Series Got Canceled, Actor Explains

According to a report from Nexus Point News, the release of Marvel Animation’s X-Men ‘97 has been pushed back to 2026.

The outlet claims that the reason is because the story and scripts for Season 2 were undergoing rewrites. It was previously reported after showrunner Beau DeMayo was fired, that Marvel has removed DeMayo’s executive producer credit for X-Men ’97 Season 2, and the company was rewriting “most” of the new season, so they can remove DeMayo’s writing credit as well.

It’s common sense that the release of the series would be delayed if the show was going through heavy rewrites. So, it’s looking like fans will have to be patient and wait a little longer before we see the return of the series.

When talking about the second season of X-Men ‘97, executive producer Brad Winderbaum teased that it’s going to include two new X-teams.

He said: “There’s many teams, in Marvel, that have the letter ‘X’ that are followed by a hyphen. I would put it to you like this… there’s two other X teams in season 2.”

He doesn’t reveal who these X-teams are, but some of those teams include X-Factor, X-Force, and Weapon X-Men. Any of those would be cool to see in the series!

Winderbaum also offered an update on the process of developing Season 2, saying: “It’s still an animatic phase. Animation takes so long to make as I’m sure you know.

“There was a great bit about this in Invincible season 2. They just nailed it so hard, it is the greatest. And it takes a long time. Because the studio wants to see how successful the first season is before they greenlight the second season there’s a lag.

“We were lucky enough to get the greenlight before we aired so there’s maybe less of a lag. People are just going to have to be patient with us.”

Season 3 of X-Men ’97 is also currently in development. Matthew Chancey, writer and producer on What If, is currently working on the series.
