The title character in Netflix‘s forthcoming Adam Sandler-led sequel Happy Gilmore 2 won’t be the only person onscreen known for sometimes letting emotions get the best of him.
Professional golfer John Daly spoke to OutKick’s Mike Gunzelman for a recent social media post and revealed that he has filmed a role in Happy Gilmore 2. Director Kyle Newacheck‘s golf-focused comedy feature began shooting Sept. 9 in New Jersey.
When asked if Sandler had reached out about a part in the movie, Daly replied, “I’ve already filmed. We’re getting it done.” He then made a shush gesture to the camera for viewers to keep the news under wraps.
Like Sandler’s character Happy Gilmore, Daly has been well-known for his long drives and colorful behavior. A two-time major champion dubbed “Long John” for his powerful swings, Daly has been suspended multiple times by the PGA Tour and got into a fight with a spectator on the golf course in a 1994 incident. Daly’s personal life has also been a source for headlines, with the athlete having been open about his struggles with alcoholism and excessive gambling.
In May, Sandler appeared on the Dan Patrick Show, where the actor shared that his longtime writing partner Tim Herlihy, who worked on the Happy Gilmore 2 script with Sandler, had met up with Daly at a recent golf tournament. Sandler noted that Daly was regaling Herlihy with memorable stories.
When asked whether Daly would appear in the movie, Sandler said at the time, “I would like to think so. You never know, but I love him. I always did love him.” Sandler also noted that he would love for Tiger Woods to appear in the film as well.
Daly isn’t the only prominent sports figure set to appear in Happy Gilmore 2, with Sandler previously revealing that Travis Kelce will make a cameo. Margaret Qualley, Bad Bunny and Benny Safdie are among the sequel’s castmembers, with Christopher McDonald and Julie Bowen reprising their roles from director Dennis Dugan’s original Happy Gilmore that hit theaters in 1996 from Universal Pictures.
