Chicago Fire Season 13 Episode 2 came out swinging with intense calls and in-house drama, and we’re here for it.

After last week’s relatively uneventful premiere, Wednesday’s hottest firefighter show brought us an hour with a few more teeth in it.

The episode leaned in a surprising direction with a few more details about 118’s new chief, Damon caused friction in Stellaride land, and as for Carvolet … well, I’ll get to that.

Herrmann Passes the Smell Test

I don’t say this lightly.

This Herrmann-smells-sexy storyline was my favorite light-hearted bit Chicago Fire has ever done.

First, who can resist a long-standing couple who still gets hot and bothered by each other?

Second, nothing will ever top the hilarity that ensued when Herrmann recruited Ritter to help him sniff strangers so he could get laid.

These kinds of shenanigans are exactly why we love this show so much.

Between the friendship that knows no limits, the wholesome masculinity, and the absurd silliness of it all, we get a soap opera-dramedy combo that rarely disappoints.

Mouch and Herrmann are buddies for life.

Here’s Why I No Longer Ship Carver and Violet

Ugh. We learned in this episode that Carver completely ghosted Violet after telling her he was in love with her.

Then, even though she apologized and tried to make nice, he has completely ignored her since returning from furlough.

I hated the way he talked about the girl he’s seeing, and continuing to treat Violet like she’s invisible is immature and gross of him.

Honestly, Violet deserves so much better.

Violet and Lizzie on the job.

Setting Sail on a New Ship in Chicago Fire Season 13 Episode 2

While the 9-1-1 stans (myself included) lose their minds over a potential Buck/Eddie relationship, I’m bringing that energy to Chicago Fire.

Violet and Novak have great chemistry, and it would do wonders for all of One Chicago to add more LGBTQ+ representation to the mix.

Novak might seem like she’s obsessed with getting Violet a date to help her move on from Carver, but if you read between the lines, she’s really spending a lot of time talking about how great Violet is.

I know it’s hypocritical of me because I’ve spoken out against workplace romances before, but I’ll almost always make an exception for a good piece of sapphic representation.

We obviously don’t know Novak all that well yet.

But we do know Violet, and she deserves so much better than waiting for someone who refuses to give her the time of day.

Damon is covered in sweat.

Stella, Severide, and the Elephant in the Room

It seemed pretty clear from the moment we found out who Damon was that he would be responsible for some Stellaride tension.

We saw it in action when Damon pitted husband against wife by asking Kelly not to rat him out for blatantly ignoring an order from Stella.

At first, it looked like Severide was going to keep his brother’s secret, and it was convincing enough that I was preemptively disappointed in him.

Thankfully, the Kelly Severide we know and love came to his senses, and he remembered that his loyalties (rightfully) lie with his devoted wife and not his half-brother, whom he met approximately five minutes ago.

It was also great to see Kelly heed Cruz’s warnings about the dangers of working with Damon.

Cruz approached his friend with kindness and spoke from his own experience, and Severide took it to heart. Maybe that means we’ll get to say goodbye to Damon.

The new chief gives a friendly smile.

Lifting the Curtain on Pascal on Chicago Fire Season 13 Episode 2

I’ve said it a million times: they could never make me hate Dermot Mulroney.

But it seems like the Chicago Fire writers sure are going to try their best.

During Chicago Fire Season 13 Episode 1, we learned that 118’s new chief had some secrets.

It seems like at least one of those secrets has something to do with a barely controlled anger problem, which Pascal put on full display in “Ride the Blade.”

We still don’t know what happened in Miami, but there’s a tense history with his wife, Monica (played by the enormously talented KaDee Strickland).

Pascal let loose on a punching bag and later took his fist to an old friend, so there’s definitely something sinister just under the surface with this guy.

Ritter is looking weary.
(NBC/Peter Gordon)

Ritter Finally Gets More Screen Time in Season 13

Chicago Fire Season 12 was short, and several episodes featured a large number of cast members who were missing.

We didn’t get to see everyone as frequently as we would have liked.

Thankfully, it looks like we’ll be getting face time with all our favorites this season!

Ritter was front-and-center in the premiere, joining Stella in a trust circle for Violet.

During Chicago Fire Season 13 Episode 2, we saw him tag along with Herrmann to provide the episode with comic relief.

Hopefully, this trend continues, and we’ll see more crossovers with Chicago P.D. as Ritter and Dwayne’s relationship progresses.

Stella is hard to read.
(NBC/George Burns)

What it Means to be a Girl’s Girl

The team responded to a call involving a naked woman who was accidentally impaled on a shower pipe by her partner.

In general, the call wasn’t all that different than any other call.

But I appreciated the unspoken protectiveness that Violet, Stella, and Lizzie showed the victim.

They took the lead on the call and helped the victim stay covered to maintain her dignity. The men in the room stood back and only assisted when needed.

I’m not really in the camp that enjoys showering as a group activity, but if I ever found myself in such a vulnerable position, I’d hope for first responders who would treat me with that kind of grace and kindness.

Lizzie is ready to go.
(NBC/Peter Gordon)

Chicago Fire Season 13 is Off to a Strong Start

Pascal’s history still needs to be unpacked, and something must be done about Damon.

The Stellaride baby decision is still hanging in the air. Several relationships are evolving.

With so much to address, this season is already off to a great start with a strong couple of episodes.

There’s a ton of development to look forward to, and we’ll be on the edge of our seats from now until the finale.

For now, let us know all your thoughts on the episode in the comments, and don’t forget to tune into Chicago Fire next Wednesday at 9/8c on NBC!
