Whew! Melania Trump is making a bold statement in support of abortion rights, a move that contrasts with her husband’s controversial views and reveals a hint of division between them.
On Thursday night, the former First Lady shared her strong support for abortion rights in a video post while promoting her new memoir. “Individual freedom is a fundamental principle that I safeguard,” Melania Trump stated in the latest promotional video for her forthcoming book, “Melania.” She further asserted, “Without a doubt there is no room for compromise when it comes to this essential right that all women possess from birth.” Mrs. Trump also questioned, “Individual freedom. What does ‘my body, my choice’ really mean?”
The video was released less than a day after excerpts from her book were published by The Guardian. In these excerpts, she posed a critical question: “Why should anyone other than the woman herself have the power to determine what she does with her own body? A woman’s fundamental right of individual liberty, to her own life, grants her the authority to terminate her pregnancy if she wishes.” She continued, “Restricting a woman’s right to choose whether to terminate an unwanted pregnancy is the same as denying her control over her own body. I have carried this belief with me throughout my entire adult life.”

Earlier this year, the Republican presidential candidate, Donald Trump, declined to endorse a national abortion ban, stating that abortion decisions should be left to the states. Like Melania, many believe that the choice regarding abortion should rest solely with the woman, rather than being dictated by law.
While Donald Trump has not publicly commented on Melania’s remarks, the campaign of Democratic nominee Kamala Harris quickly responded. Harris spokeswoman Sarafina Chitika issued a statement to CNBC, saying, “Sadly for the women across America, Mrs. Trump’s husband firmly disagrees with her and is the reason that more than one in three American women live under a Trump Abortion Ban that threatens their health, their freedom, and their lives.”
Chitika concluded, “Donald Trump has made it abundantly clear: If he wins in November, he will ban abortion nationwide, punish women, and restrict women’s access to reproductive health care.”
