Guerdy Abraira, 46, is still reflecting on the Stage 0 breast cancer diagnosis she received in 2023.
During an exclusive interview with People, the successful wedding planner and Real Housewives of Miami star detailed the strenuous steps she took to become cancer free late last year. Abraira was on a trip in St. Barts helping a friend prepare for their 10th wedding anniversary when her doctor called her with the scary news.
“‘Yes, you have breast cancer, but you caught it right on time and it’s considered Stage 0,’” Abraira told People of the unexpected call. “’You won’t need chemo. You’re going to be fine.’”

Abraira was diagnosed with Stage 1B estrogen-receptor-positive breast cancer.
Abraira was diagnosed with Stage 1B estrogen-receptor-positive breast cancer in her left breast, an early form of breast cancer where the tumor is typically small, often less than 2 centimeters, and has spread to one or a few nearby lymph nodes. This type of cancer is characterized by the presence of estrogen receptors, meaning the cancer cells grow in response to estrogen.
Treatment for Stage 1B estrogen-receptor-positive breast cancer usually involves a combination of surgery, radiation therapy, hormone therapy, and sometimes chemotherapy or targeted therapy, according to Mayo Clinic. Ten weeks later, she had a lumpectomy to excise the tumor. To ensure the cancer would not return, the reality TV star underwent four sessions of therapy followed by 20 rounds of radiation, an experience she recalled as the “worst thing ever.”
Abraira emphasized, “It’s a roller coaster you just want to get off of.”
However, there were profound moments throughout Abraira’s cancer journey. The star made the courageous decision to share her recovery process with fans on The Real Housewives Of Miami. During the 2023 season, viewers got to witness her husband, Russell Abraira, shave her head as they shared the difficult news of her diagnosis with their two sons, Miles and Liam. During an interview with Kate Casey in February, the star revealed that over 300 women reached out to her for support on their cancer journey, applauding her for sharing her experience.
“Now more than ever I’m going to speak about it,” Abraira, who became cancer free in November 2023, told People. “I’m the ‘cancer girl’—if you want to call it that. God told me that I’m the ambassador to do it.” The star continued, “I’m Guerdy 2.0 now. Selfish is the way I want to live my life now because I was giving so much of myself to others.”
Abraira is focusing on her health by limiting her workload to just a few weddings each year. She now spends much of her time savoring life in Miami with her husband, Russell, and their children. “The stress of deadlines, floor plans, I almost get PTSD in a way,” she added. “I’m obsessed with my life right now. I’m up in my kids’ business all day long, every day. We’re closer than ever.”
