After being drafted into the NBA alongside his Props LeBron James, Bronny gives a detailed look at his journey post-cardiac arrest.
Recently, NBA history was created by LeBron and Bronny James. The duo became the NBA’s first father-son duo to hit the court together. With LeBron still elite in his 22nd season and Bronny suffering a cardiac arrest last year, it’s even a miracle.
Bronny James Jr. covered the latest issue of Men’s Health and told his story in his own words.
According to Men’s Health after cardiac arrest, Bronny reset his routine and went back to square one. The magazine pointed out that when discussing his cardiac arrest Bronny tensed up and dropped eye contact.
Yes, Bronny James Jr. made it to the NBA yet it’s clear the health recovery isn’t over, and is barely a year behind him.
“I got real on top of my routines to get back to where I was. I had to do breathing exercises and stuff.”Bronny revealed. “It was a total reset. I have to stay on top of my heart medications, and…I got my heart pillow,” he told Men’s Health. “When I coughed, it used to hurt a little bit, but you get this pillow, and when you cough you just hold it so it doesn’t hurt.”
In a rare moment of vulnerability, Bronny admits he is still recovering and isn’t back to 100%.
“My days aren’t normal anymore,” he said. “I still feel like I’m getting back, I’m getting back to where I was.” -said Bronny.
Getting back on the court so soon after cardiac arrest and heart surgery could be a bit much. However, Bronny insists he’s made for this and learned from his father to block out the outside noise.
“Everything I’ve been through over the years has prepared me for this,” Bronny confessed. “I really think it just ties back to me experiencing so much negativity and pushing through all of that. I feel like it built me to where any situation that is trying to hold me back or I’m not fighting through at the time, I can sustain my comfortability and belief in myself to keep going. I mean, there might be a couple times that I look at something and it makes me mad, and I go out and play better, but most of the time, it’s in through one, out the other.”
Bronny says his younger self didn’t understand certain parts of his upbringing as the eldest James. Even more, he never expected the scrutiny and notoriety to be part of his life.
“Growing up, I didn’t really understand why. Everything was going on. I wasn’t really paying attention to everything, so it was a surprise to me, but not really, because I knew it was happening, but I didn’t know it was going to flood over me like that.” -Bronny reflected.
Being in the NBA he can tell his story in his own words and seems set on keeping it as real as possible.
