Ryan Murphy and FX chairman John Landgraf recently discussed the major twist in Grotesquerie Episode 7. The episode reveals that all prior events were part of Lois Tryon’s comatose mind. Murphy explained that this twist was planned from the start. Landgraf hinted at more surprises coming later in the season.

Ryan Murphy and John Landgraf discuss Grotesquerie Episode 7’s twist

In Episode 7 of Grotesquerie, the twist reveals that the entire story up to that point was a manifestation of a comatose Lois Tryon’s mind.

Ryan Murphy told TheWrap, “It was always baked into the DNA of Grotesquerie,” indicating that this was planned from the start. John Landgraf, FX Networks chairman, said, “It hasn’t fully established itself as the series it wants to be until the end of the 10th episode.”

Murphy explained how details like the burning curtain in the opening scene referenced Lois’ hospital bed. The series includes subtle nods to Lois’ coma. For example, Lesley Manville’s character eats cherries, symbolizing Lois’ subconscious fear of blood clots. Murphy noted, “Every scene in [their meeting] was designed to feel like a dream.” This includes the idyllic encounter with Eddie, played by Travis Kelce.

Murphy and Landgraf hint at Travis Kelce love scene and more

Ryan Murphy hinted at the possibility of a love scene between Niecy Nash and Travis Kelce, explaining, “They have a wonderful chemistry,” but joked, “I don’t want to say anything to piss off the Swifties” (via Variety). Kelce was reportedly “a little nervous” on set, but Nash helped him feel comfortable, which helped them develop a strong on-screen bond.

Landgraf teased that there will be more twists in the series. He described Grotesquerie as a “Russian nesting doll” with layers of meaning revealed as the season progresses. He stated that viewers will not fully understand the show’s scope until the tenth episode.
