Lionsgate is developing a new film adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’ novel American Psycho, and Luca Guadagnino (Challengers, Suspiria, Bones and All) is set to direct.

The script for the film comes from Scott Z. Burns, and the report makes a point of saying that this “will not be a remake of the 2000 film, but a new adaptation of Ellis’ novel.”

The original Christian Bale film is a classic and it was adapted by director Mary Harron from a screenplay by Harron & Guinevere Turner.

Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson said in a statement: “We are thrilled to add another elite filmmaker to our upcoming slate. Luca is a brilliant artist, and the perfect visionary to create a whole new interpretation of this potent and classic IP.”

I guess they feel this story needs a new adaptation for a new generation.

American Psycho is a satirical novel that follows the life of Patrick Bateman, a wealthy and successful investment banker in 1980s Manhattan. Beneath his polished exterior, Bateman harbors violent, psychopathic tendencies, indulging in brutal acts of murder, torture, and sexual violence.

The story portrays his dual life as he navigates high society, obsessing over materialism, designer brands, and superficial relationships, while simultaneously engaging in heinous acts that seem to go unnoticed by those around him.

The story provides a sharp critique of the greed, narcissism, and moral decay of Wall Street culture during the Reagan era.

The Lionsgate film will be produced by Frenesy Films, and executive produced by Sam Pressman, the son of Edward R. Pressman, producer of the first adaptation, through his company Pressman Film.

Guadagnino is currently in post-production on After the Hunt, starring Julia Roberts.

Is anyone interested in watching a new American Psycho movie?
