DC Studios co-CEO and director James Gunn has revealed that actor Benjamin Byron Davis providing the voice of the Batman villain, Rupert Thorne, in the DCU animated series Creature Commandos.

We got our first look at Thorne in the latest trailer that was released for for the DC animated series, which was written by Gunn.

Rupert Thorne is a prominent crime boss in Gotham City in the comics, and he’s known for his deep connections to organized crime and his ambition to control the city’s underworld.

He’s a ruthless and manipulative figure, who also has a political streak, often using his wealth and influence to sway public opinion and corrupt officials, including police and politicians, to further his criminal enterprises.

He is constantly attempting to undermine Batman’s efforts to clean up Gotham. Thorne’s influence is so vast that he even rivals Gotham’s other major villains, though he tends to rely more on cunning and power plays than on the theatrics common to Batman’s rogue gallery.

I’m mostly familiar with him through his time on Batman: The Animated Series.

The update on the character came through a screenshot that Davis shared on Instagram, in which Gunn addressed Davis as Rupert Thorne in a reply to his comment.

Davis wrote in the post: “Well, the cat is out of the bag… Thrilled to be able to share I’ll be bringing Rupert Thorne to the DCU alongside the absolutely remarkable ensemble James Gunn has assembled for ‘Creature Commandos’!”

Like with all of the characters in the Creature Commandos series, there’s a chance that at some point Thorne will pop up in a live-action film as well.

The series “tracks a secret team of incarcerated monsters recruited for missions deemed too dangerous for humans. When all else fails…they’re your last, worst option.”

Creature Commandos will premiere on Max in December 5th, 2024.
