A new trilogy of Star Wars movies has been announced.

Lucasfilm has closed a deal with Simon Kinberg to develop a brand-new trilogy of Star Wars movies. Kinberg will write all three films and produce them alongside Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy.

What do we know about the new Star Wars trilogy that is now in development?

Deadline reports that Kinberg’s movies may be the next chapters of the Skywalker Saga; although, this does not appear to be set in stone at this time.

“I heard this will comprise episodes 10-12 of The Skywalker Saga that began with George Lucas’s 1977 first film that along with Steven Spielberg’s Jaws reshaped the global blockbuster game,” Deadline’s article reads. “Insiders disputed my intel that Kinberg will continue that storyline, saying this will instead begin a new saga and sits alongside Star Wars percolating projects with James Mangold, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Taika Waititi, and Donald Glover. As usual, Lucasfilm and Disney are not commenting.”

No other details are available at this time.

Kinberg previously co-created Star Wars Rebels, which ran for four seasons before ending in 2018, alongside Dave Filoni and Carrie Beck. He served as a consultant on 2015’s Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, which was directed by J.J. Abrams, and received a “thanks” credit on 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Story.

Kinberg is best known, however, for his work on the X-Men franchise. He was a writer on 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand, 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past, and 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse, while he also produced the latter two. He additionally produced 2011’s X-Men: First Class, 2016’s Deadpool, 2017’s Logan, 2018’s Deadpool 2, and 2020’s The New Mutants.

In 2019, Kinberg made his feature film directorial debut with Dark Phoenix. He also worked on 2015’s Fantastic Four and was an executive producer on Deadpool & Wolverine.
