Part 2 of Season 4 of the Outer Banks delivered high-stakes adventure and intense personal drama, pushing the Pogues to their absolute limits. Picking up from the shocking revelation that JJ isn’t Luke’s son, but rather, the child of Chandler Groff and Larissa Genrette, the season dived deep into family betrayal, the hunt for a legendary treasure, and the dark costs of loyalty.

Part 2 kicked off with JJ reeling from the discovery of his biological parentage, struggling to reconcile his identity with the truth about Groff’s involvement in his past. The Pogues raced to find the elusive blue crown, a treasure that held both the key to Blackbeard’s legacy and to Groff’s dark ambitions. But just as they closed in, they found themselves ensnared in Groff’s deadly web. The high-action chases and treasure map puzzles escalated into a life-and-death struggle, with each clue leading them closer to Groff’s inevitable betrayal.

Dalia and her gang, the Lipine Corsairs, emerged as formidable enemies with an agenda of their own, adding complexity to the treasure hunt as they chased down both Groff and the Pogues. This part of the season shifted the focus from the usual thrill of treasure hunting to the deadly reality of trust and betrayal. Groff’s ultimate deception, where he traded the blue crown for his own life and stabbed JJ, shattered the Pogues’ unity and sense of safety, leaving them to grapple with the devastating loss of their friend. Viewers were likely extremely shocked and saddened by JJ being killed, and it is difficult to imagine next season without him in it.

Character arcs took centre stage this season, with each Pogue facing their own internal battles and coming to terms with their loyalties. JJ went through the most intense evolution, grappling with his newfound parentage and the crushing realization that Chandler Groff, his biological father, is a ruthless killer who would betray even his own son. Initially, JJ tried to find redemption in Groff, hoping for a father-son connection that could fill the void in his life. However, Groff’s repeated betrayals and final act of violence against JJ, highlighted the depth of JJ’s loneliness and his desperation to belong somewhere. JJ’s decision to sacrifice the treasure for Kiara’s safety demonstrated his immense growth, revealing his understanding that the true treasure is the loyalty of his friends. Tragically, this realization came at a fatal cost, with JJ’s death marking a heartbreaking end to his journey.

John B had his own moment of reckoning, torn between his dreams of a family with Sarah and his commitment to his friends. Learning that he is going to be a father intensified his drive to protect Sarah and added emotional depth to his character. His relationship with JJ was tested as he struggled to reconcile his sense of responsibility with his frustration over JJ’s recklessness. When JJ saved Sarah’s life, John B was forced to confront his guilt and fears about fatherhood, and ultimately reconciled with JJ, only to lose him shortly after. This season made John B more grounded, as he prepared to step into a new role as a protector and father figure, carrying on the legacy of the Pogues.

Sarah was torn between her identity as a Pogue and her looming responsibilities as a soon-to-be mother. Her own family’s traumas and alliances continued to impact her, especially as she navigated her pregnancy while being on the run. Though Sarah tried to remain part of the action, her priorities began to shift, and she grappled with the knowledge that her future will soon include more than just herself and John B. The season revealed Sarah’s evolving maturity, as she balanced her loyalty to the Pogues with the need to stay safe for her baby.

Kiara stepped up as the Pogue with a renewed sense of purpose after JJ’s death. Her grief propelled her into a place of resolve, shifting her focus from treasure hunting to avenging the love of her life. Kiara’s character became more fierce and determined, as she committed to a future without JJ, by ensuring Groff paid for his betrayal. The intensity of her grief and anger, suggested that she may be willing to make sacrifices that she wouldn’t have before, bringing a darker edge to her character as the group’s moral center shifted to one of revenge.

Pope remained a crucial part of the Pogues’ journey, but his once-idealistic outlook on life has been altered by the trauma and betrayals they’ve experienced. Pope’s decision to physically intervene for JJ during his escape, demonstrated the strength of his loyalty. Pope’s growing resilience and willingness to do whatever it takes to protect the people he loves, highlights his development from a rational thinker to a proactive defender. With the loss of JJ and the threat of Groff still looming, Pope’s character seems poised for a pivotal role in their mission for justice.

The season ended on an extremely bleak note, with JJ’s tragic death casting a shadow over the group. The blue crown has slipped from their grasp, and the Lipine Corsairs remain a formidable threat. With Chandler Groff still at large, the Pogues find themselves united in their desire for justice. Kiara, devastated and vengeful, takes on the mantle of leader, promising that Groff will pay for JJ’s death. Her determination sets up a powerful motivation for Season 5, where the Pogues’ treasure hunt will shift from adventure to revenge.

Rafe’s moral ambiguity continued as he grappled with his own family’s involvement in the treasure hunt. His near-killing of Groff hints that he may finally be willing to break free from his family’s corrupt legacy, but whether he’ll truly align with the Pogues remains unclear.

With Sarah’s pregnancy, John B’s role as protector, and Kiara’s drive for revenge, the Pogues are evolving from teenagers in search of thrills to a close-knit group seeking justice and closure. They know that Groff’s death won’t bring JJ back, but they are determined to honor his memory by dismantling the forces that took him from them.

After a bleak season 3, season 4 delivered a powerful, emotional chapter that redefined the stakes for the Pogues. With rich character development, dark themes of betrayal, and a focus on family beyond blood, this season was an intense, gritty turn in the series. The tragic loss of JJ and the looming threat of Groff, set the stage for an epic final season, where the Pogues must confront not only their enemies, but the price of their journey. Season 5 promises to be a battle for justice, survival, and perhaps the closure they’ve longed for.
