It’s been a big year for TDE artist and Florida native Doechii, from critical acclaim to leading the ladies in rap nominations for the Grammys!
After storming the pop charts in March with her track Alter Ego ft. JT and Kaytranada, Doechii delivered one of the year’s most refreshing rap projects, Alligator Bites Never Heal.
The exciting lyrical juggernaut combines effortless wordplay with raw emotion and vulnerability like few in her generation. And it seems that the Grammy committee felt what she was putting down. Doechii is nominated in four categories: Best New Artist, Best Rap Album, Best Rap Performance, and Best Remixed Recording.
Doechii’s Dominance Is A Long Time Coming, Popping Out Like Labelmates Kendrick Lamar & SZA
Genre-bending and multifaceted, the southern rapper is poised to be as dominant as her label mate, Kendrick Lamar, in the world of hip-hop. TDE seems to have cracked the code on signing otherworldly talented and creative artists while allowing them to maintain their individuality and bloom on their own terms.
Last year, her label mate SZA, led all artists —men and women—with nine nominations for her long-awaited album S.O.S. She took the stage that night and went home with three gramophones, including Best R&B song for “Snooze.” Her loss to Taylor Swift for Album of the Year was heavily debated amongst music fans as well as industry insiders. However, the album has continued to break records including surpassing nine billion streams on Spotify.
Doechii will face off against Kendrick for Best Rap Performance as his victory song, “Not Like Us”, is also nominated in the stacked category. She’ll also contend against country music standout, Shaboozey, for Best New Artist. Whether she prevails in her four categories on music’s biggest night or not, it’s clear that the industry is sold on her being one of the most promising new acts around.
She’s also one of fashion’s newest darlings as brands like Thom Browne, Off-White, and Tommy Hilfiger all clamored to dress her in their threads during NYFW.
